Roman Šedina

Designer & Ceramicst

Porcelain reimagined

Roman comes from Bechyně, a South Bohemian town known to be a ceramics capital of the postwar Czechoslovakia. No wonder that he chose to become a ceramics designer! After finishing the Secondary School of Arts and Crafts in Bechyně, he continued to the Faculty of Art and Design at Jan Evangelista Purkyně University in Ústí nad Labem. There he also later became an assistant teacher himself.

For Roman, designing is like solving puzzles. And the fact that designers are always limited in some way is what he appreciates the most about the job. We suspect that is probably why he called his brand LIMITED! His designs, which are now gaining popularity all over Europe, are straightforward, elegant and intentionally imperfect. This is because one of Roman’s main inspirations is the Japanese technique Wabi-sabi, which translates as ‘acceptance of imperfection’. So if you ever hold one of his pieces, don’t be surprised by a bump here and there, or by the fact the clay is a little uneven. Its all intentional – let it charm you instead!

Grandlife Questions:

WHAT WOULD BE THE NAME OF YOUR AUTOBIOGRAPHY?

Roman Šedina: Clay Master.

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO SPEND YOUR SUNDAY AFTERNOONS?

I would prefer to do nothing. Just thinking about creation and its many aspects, about moments of inspiration, opportunities and the final realization of my work.

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE ONE PERSON TO SHOW YOU THEIR ARTISTIC SKILLS (in any sphere such as art, music, painting, glass, ceramics, architecture...), WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHY?

I recognize top professionals from all professions - sports, music, science and art. They are all my inspiration. I also like people who are interdisciplinary. Among them, I can name, for example, the fashion designer and musician Yoshi Yamamoto.

WHAT OR WHO HAS INSPIRED YOU LATELY AND WHY?

Meeting Bořek Šípek during my studies, both on a human and professional level. Recently, the photographer Ivan Pinkava, who became my collaborator for a while. He goes deep, asks questions and can be very inspiring.

WHAT MUSIC OR BOOKS ARE YOU LISTENING TO/READING THESE DAYS? WHO ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVORITE MUSICIANS/WRITERS?

It's Garry Clark Jr. And it's Denisa's 2018 book of the year - ABCZ, which playfully introduces Czech cultural identity and opens it up to foreign countries.

WHAT ALBUM OR SONG WOULD YOU CHOOSE AS THE SOUNDTRACK OF YOUR PERSONAL LIFE OR CREATIVE PROCESS?

Lately, I've been getting more and more into silence and nature sounds. The sound of the wind, the crackle of the fire, the sound of water...

WHEN YOU THINK ABOUT YOUR WORK/DESIGN, DO YOU THINK OF ANY SPECIFIC EMOTIONS?

When I feel I'm doing it right, I get goose bumps. Music only intensifies that feeling.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES?

I like to walk in the woods around Bechyně, lie by the river listening to its rumbling. I soak up the Mother Earth, let her fill me with renewal.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE TRAVEL DESTINATION AND WHY?

The most frequently visited country was France, specifically Versailles, Arras and Sevres and Paris. I wanted to see the sights and places I was learning about, I wanted to soak up the atmosphere. I had my bike with me, which made it easy to get as close as possible, to the heart of the cities and of the objects. I also enjoy listening to French, it's a beautiful language.
