Hanging on the edge of pop-art

Maxim Velčovský is a designer, lecturer, and – without a doubt – the face of Czech design today. Together with Jakub Berdych, he co-founded Qubus Design Studio in 2002, and already their first collection (as well as Maxim’s dissertation) was a great success. In 2007, he was named a Designer of the year at the Czech Grand Design Awards. He left Qubus in 2011 and has been working as a creative director of Lasvit ever since.

His works can be purchased at Artiseme – a unique art space born in the center of Prague. You don’t exactly need to be a design nerd to know his work – some of it, at least. Just remember the porcelain cups that look like the bottom of a Coke bottle, bust of Lenin made of blue onion china, a vase in the shape of a Wellington boot, or the slightly freaky baby head candle stand. You may also wish to follow his Facebook, as his snappy comments and anecdotes would be a pity to miss!
